This is not an isolated event. The broader developer ecosystem is teeming with independent implementations, such as the BSC-Solana-Evm-x402-payments-protocol, the xgrain402-sdk for BSC, ZeroPay (written in Rust), and machinepay (written in C++).

This flurry of activity is the direct, positive result of the strategic decentralization by the x402 Foundation. Because the protocol is an open standard , no one needs permission to build on it. This has unleashed a “land grab” to provide the best x402 services on new chains. This competition is fundamentally healthy, as it will drive down costs, increase performance, and accelerate innovation for the end-user: the AI agent.

The Canonization: Collaborative Standardization

At the very same time this “fringe” competition was heating up, the protocol was being formally “canonized” at the core of the internet. On November 7, 2025, a formal IETF Internet-Draft (draft-jeftovic-x402-dns-discovery-00) was submitted.

This draft defines a standard, universal mechanism for locating x402 payment resources using the internet’s core address book: the Domain Name System (DNS). The proposal for _x402 TXT records aims to elevate x402 from an “application-layer” protocol to a true “internet-layer” primitive, woven into the fabric of the web alongside DNS records for email (MX) and other foundational services.

The Two Halves of a Mature Protocol

These two event clusters—the chaotic BNB “bidding war” and the formal IETF draft—are the most powerful signal yet of a healthy, maturing ecosystem. A successful open protocol needs two things: standardization and competition.

1. The IETF Draft provides the collaborative standardization. It creates a stable, reliable common language (the “standard”) that everyone can agree on, ensuring interoperability.

2. The BNB “Bidding War” provides the permissionless competition. It creates a dynamic, innovative marketplace of “facilitators” who all “speak” that common language (the “competition”).

This combination is the holy grail. It is not a top-down monopoly, nor is it a chaotic free-for-all of incompatible standards. It is the same model that made TCP/IP (the standard) and the ISP market (the competition) build the internet we know.

October 2025 was the month the “rational” enterprise validation from Google and Visa was met by the “irrational” exuberance of the open market. It was a month of pure speculative fervor, with all narratives converging on the “agent” theme:

• Oct 10: Zerebro (ZEREBRO), a “crypto-native agent platform” promoting a consumer agent launchpad, experienced a significant price surge.

• Oct 24: The S.A.N.T.A token—an acronym for “Swarm of Autonomous Networked Task Agents”—was listed on the WEEX exchange, explicitly tied to Questflow’s agent platform technology.

• Oct 25: The PING token, marketed as “the first coin launched on x402,” became a phenomenon on the Base blockchain, driving an 8,200% surge in trading volume within a single week.

The PING Token: A Critical Inflection Point

The Zerebro and S.A.N.T.A tokens were “agent-themed”. This is interesting, but not new. The PING token, however, is profoundly different and signals a critical inflection point for the ecosystem.

The PING token’s narrative wasn’t just “we use AI.” Its entire value proposition was its proximity to the x402 protocol: “the first coin launched on x402”. This is a critical sign of ecosystem maturity. The protocol (x402) has transcended its role as mere infrastructure and has become a brand. It is now a platform that imbues assets launched on it with a narrative value, much like “the first ERC-20” or “the first app on the App Store” in previous technology cycles.

This creates a powerful, self-perpetuating economic flywheel that will drive adoption faster than any enterprise partnership.

1. A new token (PING) launches, marketing itself as “x402-native.”

2. Its speculative surge (8,200% volume) draws massive public attention.

3. This attention is funneled directly back to the x402 protocol itself, increasing its “brand value” and developer mindshare.

4. This makes the “x402-native” narrative even more valuable for the next token that launches, and the cycle repeats.

The Two-Track Economy

This marks the clear emergence of a “two-track” economy. In the “boardroom track” (as seen with Visa ), trusted, regulated entities are building bridges. In the “permissionless track” (this post), anonymous developers are launching speculative tokens. The agentic economy, built on open protocols like x402, not only allows both of these to co-exist—it thrives on their interaction.

If the Google and Cloudflare announcements in September represented the “Big Tech” validation of the agentic economy, the events of October 14, 2025, represented the “Big Finance” validation. On that day, Visa released its Trusted Agent Protocol (TAP).

This move signifies that the agentic economy is not a niche “crypto-only” phenomenon. It is the future of all commerce, and the existing financial rails are racing to connect to it.

The Key Detail: “Alignment”

The crucial takeaway from Visa’s announcement was its explicit statement of “alignment with OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol and Coinbase’s x402 standard”.

Just like Google, Visa is not trying to replace x402. It is ingesting it. This move demonstrates a clear understanding of the new economic layers. Visa recognizes that its core strength is in its existing, off-chain network of trust, identity, and credit. Its weakness, in this new paradigm, is the lack of a protocol for on-chain, programmatic, agent-native micropayments.

x402 is rapidly becoming the interoperability layer between the old and new economies.

1. The agentic economy needs access to the trillions of dollars locked in the TradFi system (e.g., a user’s Visa card).

2. The TradFi system needs a way to let its users (and, soon, their autonomous agents) interact with the on-chain economy.

3. Visa’s TAP is the bridge. It is a protocol to manage the identity, authority, and funding for an agent.

4. Once that agent is authorized and its wallet is funded, it will use the x402 protocol to actually transact and pay for services at the protocol level.

We are witnessing a “great convergence” in real-time: TradFi (Visa) is building the “on-ramp” to the new “superhighway” (x402).

The Stage is Set

In just 60 days, the agentic economy’s foundational protocol (x402) has been adopted by the world’s largest search and web-services company (Google) and the world’s largest payment network (Visa). The “seriousness” of this new economy is no longer in question. This stability and validation, however, is about to unleash its chaotic twin: a wave of pure, unadulterated speculation.

On September 16, 2025, the agentic economy received its single greatest enterprise validation to date. Google announced its Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open standard backed by over 60 partners, including giants like Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, and Shopify.¹ With this move, a pillar of the existing web declared that agent-based commerce is the future.

The most critical detail of this announcement was what AP2 included: the “A2A x402 extension” developed in collaboration with Coinbase and MetaMask.¹ Google, with its own vast Google Pay ecosystem, made a conscious decision not to build a proprietary, on-chain competitor. It chose to integrate x402 as the standard for blockchain-based agent transactions. This is an incredible “buy” signal, indicating that x402 has won the protocol war for web-native machine payments.

The “Gift” of Governance: The x402 Foundation

The reason why Google felt comfortable making this move became clear just one week later. On September 23, 2025, Cloudflare and Coinbase jointly announced the launch of the x402 Foundation.¹

Cloudflare’s CEO, Matthew Prince, stated the mission clearly: to ensure x402 has “independent governance” and is treated as a “foundational internet primitive”.¹ Simultaneously, Cloudflare integrated x402 into its Agents SDK, solidifying its commitment. This move explains how other projects, like xPay.sh, can confidently list Google and Cloudflare as “Partners” in their ecosystem.⁴

Strategic Decentralization: The Causal Link

These two “Major” events ¹ are not a coincidence. They are a direct cause-and-effect of a brilliant strategy that can be described as “strategic decentralization.”

1. For a competitor like Google to adopt a protocol built by Coinbase, it needs an ironclad guarantee of neutrality. No $2 trillion company will build its future on a protocol that its competitor can unilaterally change.

2. The creation of the x402 Foundation ¹ was that guarantee. By “giving away” the protocol to an independent, non-profit foundation, Coinbase de-risked its adoption for everyone.

3. This move, likely planned for months, gave Google, Cloudflare, and the 60+ other partners ¹ the political and commercial “air cover” they needed to back x402 as the open standard.

4. In this, Coinbase sacrificed control to gain ubiquity. It chose to own a piece of a massive, universally adopted ecosystem rather than all of a small, proprietary one. This is the moment x402 stopped being “a cool Coinbase project” and became true, foundational internet infrastructure.

Following its “Big Bang” launch, the x402 protocol underwent its first critical expansion. On August 30, 2025, the protocol’s official repository added support for the Solana (SVM) blockchain. This is a significant infrastructural milestone.

This move fulfills the core “Principle” from Coinbase’s original whitepaper: to be “Chain and token agnostic”. The initial launch on an Ethereum L2 (Base) was a success, but adding Solana support proved that x402 is not a siloed, single-chain protocol. It is a true, abstract standard that can sit atop any ledger. This decision is vital as it opens the agentic economy to a high-speed, low-cost transaction ecosystem, which is essential for the micro-transactions that autonomous agents will likely perform at scale.

The “Fringe” Energy: AI-Native Speculation

Simultaneously, a different kind of energy was brewing. In July 2025, the GOAT token, an “AI-powered meme coin born from the ‘Terminal of Truths’ AI experiment,” gained significant notoriety. This project captured the market’s imagination with its “viral, meme-driven growth” and an airdrop strategy that rewarded wallets for following the “agent” on social media.

It is tempting to dismiss this as unrelated, frivolous speculation. However, this event is a profound, early signal of market interest. The GOAT token was one of the first assets to successfully tokenize the concept of an autonomous AI agent. It created a direct, financial link between an agent’s “social” activity and a market-traded asset, demonstrating a public appetite for AI-native value.

The Symbiotic Feedback Loop

These two events—the “serious” Solana integration and the “frivolous” GOAT token—are not separate stories. They are two sides of the same adoption coin, forming a symbiotic feedback loop that drives new technological paradigms.

The process unfolds as follows:

1. New technological paradigms are always driven by both utility and narrative (hype).

2. The “serious” developers, like those building independent x402 implementations , are attracted by the utility of the Solana integration. They see a robust, multi-chain protocol to build real products on.

3. The “market” (retail, speculators, capital) is attracted by the narrative of “AI-powered” assets like GOAT.

4. This creates the feedback loop: The hype from GOAT draws massive public attention and capital to the “agentic economy” space. This attention and capital, in turn, incentivize and fund the “serious” developers to build the underlying infrastructure (like Solana support).

5. The improved infrastructure makes the protocol more powerful, which enables new applications, which in turn fuel the next wave of hype. One force provides the “engine” (utility), while the other provides the “fuel” (capital and attention).

The “Big Bang” Moment

On May 6, 2025, the agentic economy experienced its “Big Bang.” This foundational event was not the launch of a new large language model but a protocol release from Coinbase: the x402 open standard. For decades, the internet has been a protocol for information, not value. We have relied on “bolted-on,” human-centric gateways that require clicks, sessions, and pre-established trust. AI agents, however, operate at the protocol level and require a native value layer.

The genius of the x402 standard is not in creating a new payment network from scratch. Instead, it “awakens” a long-dormant piece of web technology: the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code. This code was reserved by the internet’s original architects in 1997 for future use but was never implemented. By building an open standard around it, Coinbase provided a machine-native, programmable payment rail that is “HTTP Native” and “chain and token agnostic”.

How It Actually Works: The Machine-Legible “Ask”

The x402 protocol provides the missing key to agentic commerce by standardizing the conversation about value between machines. The technical flow is elegant in its simplicity :

1. The Ask: An AI agent (the client) requests a digital resource, such as an API endpoint or a piece of premium data.

2. The “Payment Required” Signal: The resource server, if it is not free, returns an HTTP 402 Payment Required status. This is not an error. The response includes crucial payment details: what stablecoins are accepted (e.g., USDC), on which network (e.g., Base), the exact amount, and where to send it.

3. The Payment: The client, now armed with machine-readable payment instructions, constructs a payment payload and settles the transaction on-chain.

4. Proof and Access: The client retries its original request, this time including an X-PAYMENT header that contains cryptographic proof of the payment (a signed payload).

5. Verification and Delivery: The server verifies the proof and, if valid, delivers the resource.

This flow is revolutionary. An AI agent cannot “click to pay” on a traditional checkout page. It needs a machine-readable instruction. By embedding the payment “ask” and “proof” directly into the HTTP request/response flow, x402 makes any API or resource programmatically monetizable by autonomous machines.

The Bedrock of the Agentic Economy

Without a protocol like x402, the “agentic economy” remains a fantasy. Agents can think (using LLMs) and act (using frameworks), but they cannot transact. They cannot autonomously pay for their own compute, for premium data, or for services rendered by other agents.

The launch of x402 provides the T-0 infrastructure for this entire new economy. It is the missing piece that enables AI agents, such as those from Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI (GPT), to transact autonomously, finally connecting the world of artificial intelligence to the world of real-world value.
